Inpatient and Outpatient Surgical Services

While the thought of surgery can be frightening, patients at Athens-Limestone Hospital can be assured that they are in capable hands.

Over 450 surgical procedures are performed each month at Athens-Limestone Hospital. We perform surgeries in the following specialties:
General Surgery/Vascular
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
Pain Management

Surgical Services is located on the third floor of the hospital and consists of:
The 31 bed One Day Admissions Unit
The Operating Room (4 rooms, plus rooms for Orthopedics, Cystoscopy, Endoscopy and Obstetrics)
The 10 bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit (recovery room)
The Central Sterile Department

Athens-Limestone Hospital has a recently updated One Day Admissions Unit. One Day Surgery patients now have more room and more privacy. The new wing provides more beds, separated for pre-op and post-op care. The redesigned patient flow provides a more streamlined hospital visit. A brand new surgery waiting room provides families and friends with a larger, more convenient area.

Our Operating Room provides the latest technological advances. The surgical services staff is comprised of: Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Surgical Technicians, Patient Care Assistants, Central Sterile Technicians, Environmental Services Aides, Transporters, Secretary, and a Scheduler. The anesthesia department is made up of both physicians and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). The entire surgical services staff is committed to providing excellent service for our patients.

In order to truly provide a One-Day experience, the patient will be contacted by phone the day prior to surgery. The out-patient nurse will obtain a brief health history and give other instructions as necessary to include patient arrival time the day of surgery. Some patients may be asked to come in the day before surgery for pre-operative lab work and/or x-rays.

On the day of surgery, the patient checks in at the third floor reception desk and will be escorted to the One-Day Admissions Unit at the appropriate time. When the patient is transported to the operating room, the family will be directed to the waiting room and updated when the surgery begins and again when surgery is complete.

Patients recover from surgery in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit and are returned to the One Day Admissions Unit to continue the recovery process. From there they will be discharged home or transferred to the inpatient surgical floor for further care.

Because of the dedication and commitment of our staff, the Surgical Services Department at Athens-Limestone Hospital consistently receives high marks for patient satisfaction and low infection rate. We take great pride in our ability to provide high quality surgical services in a caring, professional environment. We hope that if the need arises, we will have the opportunity to serve you and your family in the future.
