Tennessee Doctor is Medical Director of Hospital's Radiology Department
Even though his fellow workers at Athens-Limestone Hospital often joke that his "blood runs orange," Dr. Paul Fry says he is proud to call this area home. A member of the Radiology of Huntsville group that covers radiology physican needs in Athens, Dr. Fry, who is the medical director of the group in Athens, says life circumstances led him to this area and in 2007 to Athens.

Fry was born and raised in Knoxville, Tenn., home of the "Big Orange," the University of Tennessee Volunteers. He was recently recognized nationally in "Who's Who" as he continues in his career in medical education. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology.

"For the size of the community of Athens to have a hospital this size is very unique," he said. "I've worked in smaller towns, but none compare to this hospital. With the relationship it has with Huntsville Hospital, it will continue to get even better."

Radilogy of Huntsville is comprised of 30 physicians who are committed to improving the healthcare of patients by delivering state of the art imaging services and by advancing radiology through research and education of imaging professionals.

"Having Dr. Paul Fry and Radiology of Huntsville to cover our radiology physician needs has been an excellent addition at Athens-Limestone Hospital," said A-L Hospital CEO Cary Payne. "We continue to grow our patient base and physician/service availability to include specialists such as cardiology and neurology."

Of the 30 physicians in the group, five rotate out of Athens. Dr. Fry provides primary coverage and spends three-fifths of his time working out of Athens-Limestone Hospital.

Through the Radiology Department, the hospital has installed a fast new CT System which allows exam time to drop from 30 minutes to seconds.Studies like chest exams, which used to take 20-30 minutes to perform, can now be completed in just 20 seconds. This faster CT scanner (also called CAT scanner) is less taxing on patients and faster exam times mean shorter wait times so some patients can be treated faster.

In addition, the hospital's MRI is the most powerful MRI in the area which means it will provide the physician with more information to make a more accurate diagnosis at the hospital. The MRI is the fastest MRI in the area which means the procedure will take less time.

The hospital is also offering Mammography in two locations, at the hospital at 700 West Market Street, and at Athens-Limsetone Diagnostic Center at 15243 Greenfield Drive. Mammography is performed to screen healthy women for signs of breast cancer. It is also used to follow-up on findings from screening or to evaluate a woman who has symptoms of breast disease. Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early.

"With Dr. Fry and Radiology of Huntsville, we are now staffed to cover our expanding radiology and diagnostic services. It is comforting to know that the level of expertise and manpower support is available to cover our radiology needs 24 hours a day. It is so fortunate for us that Dr. Fry has the specialty back-up as well. With the addition of a second digital mammography machine in the next few months, we are truly the premier diagnostic services provider for Athens, Limestone County and the surrounding area, says Payne."
